In January 2009, Gary LaBarbera became President of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, representing 120,000 working men and women. Prior to assuming the position as President of the Building Trades, Mr. LaBarbera served organized labor in several other capacities, including President of the New York City Central Labor Council, President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Joint Council 16 and President of Teamsters Local #282. Having been actively involved in the Teamsters since the early 1980′s, Gary served as a Steward and was appointed to the position of Business Agent. He was one of the first members of Local #282 to graduate from Cornell University’s School of Industrial Labor Relations Labor Studies Program in 1994.
In 2005, at the request of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gary was seated on the Mayor’s Commission on Construction Opportunity. He was also asked to Chair the New York City Model Code Program Labor Advisory Committee. Gary has also served on the MTA Blue Ribbon Panel on Capitol Construction as well as being a New York State Senate appointee to the Traffic Mitigation Commission. In addition to Gary’s numerous business commitments, he has contributed significantly to many charities and educational programs, including the Cardinal’s Committee of the Laity, Jewish National Fund, Boy Scouts of America – Greater NY Council, Angel Guardians for the Elderly and the Friends of St. Dominics. Gary currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Outreach Project and the Samaritan Foundation.
