On October 1, 2004 Robert Bonanza became the Business Manager of the 15,000 member Mason Tenders District Council of Greater New York and Long Island. The road he traveled to reach his current position within the Laborer’s International Union of North America started more than 25 years ago when Bobby began his career as a Laborer. Bobby Bonanza represents a new generation of labor leader, dedicated to organizing, social justice and improving the lives of the members of the union.
In 1996 during the period that the Mason Tenders District Council and its affiliated unions were reconfigured, Bobby was elected President of Local 66. He is one of the original members of the leadership of the Mason Tenders District Council that emerged following the historic consolidation and re-structure that took place in 1997. Under Bobby’s leadership the Mason Tenders District Council has continued to enjoy the reputation as one of the most progressive and aggressive labor organizations in the nation. Organizing the unorganized and protecting the members’ rights remains Bonanza’s primary focus. In doing so he has strengthened the Mason Tenders, by bringing a diverse membership into the Council. Today the 15,000 members include construction workers, asbestos and hazardous materials handlers, recycling and waste handlers and Catholic high school teachers.
