Hundreds gathered at McKee High School in Staten Island on the evening of January 23, 2014 for a successful Learning Day organized by Councilwoman Debi Rose and Build Up NYC for the North Shore community to explore new career opportunities in the construction, hotel and building operations and maintenance industries.
Representatives from construction pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel Trades Council were on hand to answer questions. These programs allow for workers to learn how to safely do their work in order to avoid injury to themselves and others around them.
“I had the opportunity to participate in an apprenticeship program that taught me what I needed to know to do my job safely and climb the economic ladder to become the first homeowner in my family,” said Alberto Ortiz, an insulator living in North Shore, Staten Island. “Today, I can offer my children a bright future with a home and family that has security.”
